- Sling Shot
- Silent Air Rifle
Answer: Snare Traps
In the event of a world-altering disaster, hunting food will become a necessity — regardless of how much food you have stored away. Hunting can involve stalking game through the woods, rifle in hand, but eventually, ammo will become scarce. What if you run out of ammunition but still need to hunt to survive?
If only there were a passive way to hunt, with tools that could be used over and over again…
Snare a Hare
Snares have been used to hunt game for thousands of years — because they work. Not only are they easy to set up, but metal snares can be reused indefinitely if cared for (and an animal doesn’t break free and run off with it). Another advantage of a metal snare is that a trapped animal cannot chew through it as it could with simple cordage.
The greatest advantage of using snare traps is that they work passively, meaning you don’t have to spend your time hunting the animal you need for your dinner. A snare works by using bait to draw the animal to it. Set the snare, place the bait, and go about your day. In a survival scenario, you don’t want to waste time and calories stalking prey through the woods.
Snare Hunting is an Art
Entire novels exist that are dedicated to the art of trapping with snares because this technique is so much more complex than setting a noose and walking away. The size, position, location, bait, and type of trap vary depending on the target animal you wish to ensnare. You won’t catch a rabbit using meat for bait, and you won’t trap a coyote if you disrupt the environment in an obvious way while setting the snare. The best way to know what will be necessary is to study the local wildlife, then research the best way to snare them.
In a dire situation, knowing how to set up a snare could keep you and your family fed. Thankfully, snares can be improvised with anything from fishing line to paracord in a pinch, you simply need the know-how to make them work.
It’s important to keep safety in mind when working with active snares, as one misstep could be disastrous. Check out this article to find out why.
