(ModernSurvival.org) – In a survival situation, finding a reliable source of food is problematic. While hunting is an option, there are a few downsides to stalking a large game animal. For one, it will cost a lot of time and calories to do so. Secondly, there is always a chance an animal won’t be found, or worse yet, it will get away. This is precisely why using passive trapping methods is often the best way to get food.
Unfortunately, without the proper knowledge or equipment, setting up passive traps can be a problem. However, as the following video from Poor Man Prepping shows, anyone can create a minnow trap with a knife and a soda bottle.
The trap itself is a simple build: just cut the cap end off with a knife, then slide it into the remaining portion of the bottle, nozzle side first. In the video, a fishing line is used to sew the two pieces together. Other items can be used to secure the pieces, though, such as duct tape, shoestrings, or even the inner strands of paracord.
The idea is that minnows will swim into the funnel and become stuck inside the bottle once they have passed through the threshold of the nozzle. In areas with high concentrations of minnows, the trap can collect multiple fish.
While catching minnows may seem like an odd choice, eating enough of them will provide precious calories and protein. Additionally, minnows can be used as bait for larger fish using more traditional methods. Yes, using live bait is illegal in many areas, but the choice between starving to death and getting a fine is a no-brainer.
By using a minnow trap, such as the one shown in the video above, one can both catch food and save valuable time. Just set the trap and go about hunting larger game knowing that there are multiple systems in place to get food.
