(ModernSurvival.org) – During an encounter with a mountain lion, which of these actions would be a mistake?
- Throw Rocks or Sticks
- Scream and Yell
- Turn and Run
- Make yourself look big
ANSWER: Turn and Run. Here’s why…
When facing a mountain lion, you do not want to turn and run from it. Here’s why…
Very few sounds in nature can raise the hair on the back of your neck quite like a mountain lion’s roar. Also known as the cougar, puma, panther, and catamount, the mountain lion is the largest known feline in North America. If you ever come face to face with one, do you know what to do in order to survive?
Colorado Parks and Wildlife have provided a few tips to help us avoid conflict with these majestic animals.
If you see a mountain lion, do not turn and run. Running from the big cat could make it want to chase you down. Also, the last thing you want is the animal to jump on your back and take you down. If you have ever seen a picture of a mountain lion holding a dead deer by the back of the neck, you know why you don’t want it getting on your back.
Instead, make yourself look as large as you can, then yell at it. Back away slowly, but never turn your back on the animal. Throw rocks and sticks, wave your arms, and do anything you can to scare the cat away.
If you are attacked, stay on your feet and do your best to fight back, protecting your vital areas by using your arms and legs between you and the cat.
Chances are you’ll never encounter a mountain lion in the wild — if you do it will likely be from a distance, as they are elusive animals.
Mountain lion attacks are not unheard of, though, so it’s better to be prepared and pick up the knowledge that could save your life.
