CRITICAL Tips to Stay Safe This Winter

(Modern Survival.org) – The winter months often bring snow, ice, and potentially horrible driving conditions. With a little preparation, driving in winter can be a lot safer.

Halfords Autocentre enlisted survival expert Conrad Allen to share advice on how to drive in winter conditions safely. Find out more in the video below:

Prior to driving away in your car, always check the local weather conditions to ensure you aren’t about to head straight into a blizzard. Plan extra time for the trip so that if the weather does take a sudden turn or the roads are icy, you won’t arrive at your destination late.

If you do end up driving in bad weather, here are a few tips to help you stay safe:

  • Try to brake in a straight line, not while turning. This means slowing down before you reach the turn.
  • Control your speed. Don’t go so fast as to lose control of the vehicle, but also stay fast enough so that you don’t lose traction and begin to spin out.
  • Keep your distance from other cars. If you need to slow down, give yourself enough space to do so safely. If your car begins to slide, you don’t want to slide into the back end of another vehicle.
  • If you begin to slide, take your feet off the pedals and steer. For downhill slopes, put the car into a low gear and slow down before you reach the decline.
  • In falling snow, stay in the tire lines on the road if possible.
  •  If you happen to live in a location with severe cold months, you may want to invest in winter tires.

Before getting on the road, it is always a good idea to pack a survival kit for the car. You never know when having extra supplies could become a necessity, especially in winter. Should the car get stuck in the snow, having some blankets and essential supplies could save your life—especially if help can’t get to you.
