- Reliability – First and foremost, a concealed carry firearm must be reliable. It needs to work when needed without hiccups. This is one of those “you get what you pay for” situations.
- Form Over Function – The human body comes in a wide assortment of sizes and shapes. When choosing the right concealed firearm, a person’s body dimensions and hand size become important. Having a firearm that fits comfortably in the hand is crucial. Those with small hands may have trouble holding certain models of pistols, while those with larger hands may find it difficult to operate firearms with recessed magazine releases.
- Comfort is King – The selected firearm needs to be comfortable not only to fire, but to carry every day as well. A gun that is uncomfortable to carry is easy to leave at home — leaving the owner defenseless or shopping for another option.
- Ignore Aesthetics – Selecting a gun because it “looks cool” is a horrible idea. In a perfect world, the only person who should ever see a concealed carry firearm is the person carrying it or those nearby on the range.
- Caliber – A gun that fits well in the hand and is comfortable to carry is still the wrong choice if it knocks the owner on their butt every time it’s fired. The best way to decide if a concealed carry handgun is right is to visit a range and test-fire a variety of models. This allows one to get a feel for what will work best for them.
Once a person finds that perfect fit and purchases a concealed carry firearm, it’s absolutely vital they train to use it. A person who isn’t comfortable and competent with their gun is more of a danger to themselves and their surroundings than they are to any external threat.
